LICENSED INVENTIONS
3-D HELMETS™ for Variflex, Inc.
US Utility Patent #6029283 - US Design Patents #D/049644, D/051209, D/049339 et al

We noticed that despite the introduction of helmet laws for underage bicyclists, many young people continue to ride bikes without the protection of a helmet. In answer we invented 3-D Helmets™, a series of cool designs with sculpted features and awesome graphics that encourage kids to wear their helmet.
With a variety of different cute and cool designs ranging from critters and flowers to skulls and robots, 3D Helmets™ enjoyed substantial mass market sales while protecting numerous kids from injury.
For production we created a process allowing flat plastic to be decorated and then vacuum-formed onto the sculpted helmet shell in perfect registration.

We also noticed that at retail level, helmet boxes were opened, tried on, and left lying about or returned to the wrong box. Our solution was a new open front box concept allowing product to be tried on and easily returned to the correct box.
With easy access to this irresistible item, kids would plop them on their heads first - and run begging to Mom second. Not a bad performance for a simple box design!
This groundbreaking packaging innovation was quickly copied by competitors and has now become an industry standard.

Our client enjoyed some special attention from the press with the release of 3D Helmets. The Brain Bucket™ design was even featured on several television programs as set decoration for "the cool kid's room"!
